Pinterest homepage
Founded in Palo Alto, this one year old startup is a digital pin-board site.
Pinterest attracted more than 30 million visitors in one month!
It attracts especially females and arts enthusiasts between the ages of 25 and 44.
I requested an invitation from its homepage and within minutes I received the email listed below:

Pinterest Etiquette: Try to…
Be Nice!
Be Creative. The best pinboards mix products, art, recipes and images from all across the web. Try not to pin everything from a single source.
Give Credit. If you blog about an item you found on Pinterest, it’s nice to credit your fellow pinners by linking back to the original pin.
If you have any questions, we’d love to hear from you. Email us at [removed to avoid spam] or follow us on twitter @pinterest. We also have an iPhone app.
Happy pinning!

I’ve some twitter followers that were already in on Pinterest,so I don’t know if this has influenced the invite process.
To avoid spam, It requires you to login with Facebook or Twitter.
So it seems, like Microsoft So.cl, not a really Facebook’s competitors but something related.

On your profile you can manage your connection and you can also remove the integration that you’ve created during sign-up process

Facebook,Twitter and Search Engine integration
Take a look on my Pinterest’s profile and if you’re in, I will be happy if you will follow me!

Pinterest is definitely one of the rising stars in the social networking world today. It’s one of the fastest growing sites and with growing amount of users, particularly women. I believe one thing that makes this site a success is its positivity. Users are being surrounded with beautiful things, positive messages and motivational messages all the time that make them more eager to stay and connect.
